A VERY FINE PORCUPINE QUILL & EBONY BOX (o9038)

A fine and very rare porcupine quill box, with bands of profusely inlaid bands of ebony with fine blond porcupine quills. The cushion molded lid opening to reveal a very fine interior of a lion holding a flag inscribed Galle, standing above the word Ceylon. This is the first box I have seen with the town and country mentioned, let alone a standing lion instead of the more usual elephant. The shear number of ivory dots on the exterior is testament to the quality of this fine box.

This box is sadly missing its tray and has at some time been fitted with a catch. The box is perfectly flat with no warping. Several of the ivory dots have been substituted.
