Probably from Ceylon, the carving is nice and crisp and each side has polished ovals which add contrast to the carved vines. It does have a smile on the right hand side, but I dont think it is unreasonable, and the box sits perfectly flat with no warping. It is constructed solely of ebony and is mounted with brass hardware which has not been polished. It also has its key and working lock.
