A Fine Cast Iron Grotto Dolphin Door knocker

This is one of the most beautiful door knockers I have seen, the patina, sculpting, proportion and detail are so subtle that the piece exudes a extraordinary presence.

A rare antique Georgian cast iron door knocker in the form of a dolphin, the twisted body crowned by a fanned tail is decorated with a bold anthemion and scales. Retaining a superb patina all over the body. This door knocker weighs 1.8kg and measures 21cm from tail to head. The knocker retains its original bolt and thread. The knocking pad is new and has been custom made for the piece.

For those of you that are thinking "that isn't a dolphin", well your right it is not the classic flipper; this dolphin makes reference to the classical Roman dolphins seen in mosaics, architecture and marble carvings throughout Italy, the motif was adopted again during the Renaissance and then too in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The model itself consists of a fan tail, the body with fish scales and a broad and impressively fierce head. It is Grotesque in inspiration and is cast in the most wonderful composition.
