FRENCH EMPIRE MAHOGANY BONHEUR DU JOUR

An Empire mahogany bonheur du jour. The upper section has two long drawers above two shorter drawers each having a machined gilt bronze handle. The top is decorated with a cresting in the form of a pair of scrolls flanking a ring. This doubles as a disguised handle for the dressing mirror and pleated silk screen that is hidden within the frame. At the centre of the drawer section is a gilt bronze button which when pressed releases a tambour writing slide which retains its original finely gilt tooled green Morocco leather. The piece stands on two double baluster turned legs, the capital, centre and foot mounted with finely chased bronze. The back is supported on square pilasters. The whole is supported on a plinth modelled with a recessed demi-lune at the front. Throughout the piece is veneered in finely figured flame mahogany.
France, circa 1810
