A very fine and unusual mid 19th century Anglo Indian ivory figure of a elephant and howdah. India, circa 1840 Height 13cm Width 11cm Depth 6cm
This is a particularly unusual carving, as the model does not follow the
normal John Company inspired design. Here, the base is thick and carved with
incised foliage, the elephant has trimmed and decorated tusks, the saddle with
long draping sides is carved with geometric cabochons. The elephants head is mounted
with a shield and the driver who has a beard is holding the finest of tools
including a spike in case the elephant looses the plot, and a fly swat,
beautifully carved with the individual hairs of the swat.
The howdah houses two men, that would appear to be a prince and another dignitary.
The struts appear replaced. The top is carved with incised decoration similar
to the base.
